Updated: Jul 20, 2021

When it comes to quarantine, our guinea pigs are having the time of their lives.

Guinea Pig Social

Since guinea pigs are very social animals, they're loving all this time with the people in their lives. The animals love to be in the center of attention, so having their owners home all the time is like heaven, especially for John.

John is what we like to call "a people pig," meaning he loves hanging out with his humans. He's almost always up for a snuggle or unplanned floor time. John's gotten to meet many people over video chat, and he loves sniffing cameras!

Meanwhile, Scribble and Ty have been enjoying the luxury of capturing much of their household's attention. They've found ways to sneak into their humans' video chats for school, where they're an instant hit. Both piggies are loving the extra lap time they've received recently.

Guinea Pig Boredom Busters

Here are a few things you can do to make your guinea pigs love you even more than they already do.

  • Take your guinea pigs outside. This activity can only be done if it it is between 70 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit outside - keep in mind that if the weather is uncomfortable for you, it's most likely uncomfortable for your guinea pigs as well - and of course, don't take your pig outside while it's raining. Be careful of birds and bunnies in your area and make sure you don't have any distractions that might lure you away from your guinea pigs. This is a great activity in warm weather - your guinea pigs will love the opportunity to run around, eat grass and explore the outdoors.

  • Make your guinea pig a toy. (If you're looking for a quick and easy activity, watch our video on super-easy DIY toys!) There are plenty of different ways to do this, in fact the only WRONG way you could do this is if you use materials that could potentially harm your guinea pig. But we all know you'd never do that.

  • Organize an assortment of veggies for your pig. There's nothing better than watching your pig munch on a fancy dinner you made yourself. Plus, all you have to do is cut up some veggies, and your pig's happy meter will rocket.

  • Play a game with your pig. Hold your pig's favorite veggie in your hand and close your fist around it. Hold your other hand out too, and make it look exactly the same as your other hand. See if your pig can tell which hand you're holding the veggie in - if they sniff it first, give them the veggie! Keep doing it - does your pig get better or worse at it?

  • Build a maze for your guinea pigs. You can use wood, like we did in this super-fun guinea pig maze video for our pigs, or any other guinea pig-safe materials you can think of. Just make sure that your maze won't collapse on top of your guinea pigs, and have some veggies on hand for if your piggies need a hint.

  • Do some guinea pig maintenance. Yes, this probably sounds boring and exhausting, but it's really a great way to bond with your pigs and get something productive done with your time. We have plenty of maintenance tips on our YouTube channel, including cage and water bottle cleaning.

  • Rearrange your guinea pig's cage setup. It's interesting to mix it up sometimes, especially if your pigs have had the same cage setup for a while. They're extremely curious animals, and it's super fun to watch them exploring their new cage arrangement.

  • Introduce your guinea pig to any other animals you might have in your house. Of course, if the other animal is hostile or territorial, you will want to avoid this activity, but otherwise, it's a great way for your guinea pig to explore foreign territory and also keep you entertained. Make sure you introduce them slowly and carefully, and never let either animal out of your sight. Don't introduce them without research, and be super super careful.

  • Try making your pig a hidey. You know, a little shelter for your pig, whether it's a house or a tunnel. Some of our favorites include a guinea pig car wash (check out our YouTube video on DIY guinea pig car wash here) and a guinea pig fort. Make sure that if you make a guinea pig fort, you use all guinea pig safe materials.

  • Just snuggle together. Whether you're reading a book, watching a movie or even on a video chat for school or with friends, your guinea pigs will love being in your company. Plus, studies have shown that being with your pets increases your happiness level, and it's incredibly important that we stay positive during these difficult times.
